The Four Types of Dental Implants

Have you ever known someone who never seems to get cavities, even though they eat an insane amount of sugar and rarely see the dentist? While this type of person is certainly rare, it showcases the notion that our mouths and bodies are all very different and need to be maintained in different ways. In that spirit, there are a number of different dental implant types that can be used to treat patients with missing, chipped, or diseased teeth. The type that we use is based on a thorough examination of your mouth and your oral and general health history. Here are the four main types of dental implants that dentists choose to offer patients:

1. Two-Stage Dental Implants:

This type of implant requires surgery to place the dental implant into the jaw bone. After letting the mouth heal for a few months, we’ll go back in for another minor surgery and expose the implant and attach the dental implant abutment and temporary crown or restoration.

2. Endosteal/Endosseous Dental Implants:

Endosteal implants are placed into the jaw bone and are usually placed in the aforementioned two-stage treatment option. These types of dental implants are often used in place of a bridge or denture.

3. Single-Stage Dental Implants:

This type of dental implant involves placing a longer implant into the jaw and gum so that the top of the implant is exposed. This allows us to go into the mouth after several months of healing and place the abutment and restoration right onto the implant without having to surgically expose the dental implant again.

4. Subperiosteal Dental Implants:

Subperiosteal dental implants are placed into the jaw bone and the metal post is exposed to hold the restoration. These types of dental implants are most often used in the single-stage treatment.

Again, it’s very important to come in for an appointment so that we can thoroughly examine your mouth and determine the right treatment plan for your circumstances. Our team has placed hundreds of implants over the dozen + years that we’ve been in San Diego, and we’re ready to help you make the best decision to give you the smile you’re looking for.
