The Link Between Periodontal Disease and Heart Health
It’s hard to believe that your teeth can have an effect on your heart. After all, you’ve always brushed your teeth to protect yourself from cavities and worked out to protect your heart.
However, new research shows a strong link between periodontal disease and cardiovascular risk. In a study that included 15,000 participants, the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology states, “Significant teeth loss was associated with LDL cholesterol levels, systolic blood pressure and waist circumference. A higher prevalence of gum bleeding was significantly associated with higher LDL cholesterol levels and systolic blood pressure.”
While heart disease is complicated and related to a wide variety of risk factors, maintaining quality oral health is something that we can all control. In the end, it’s important to see a San Diego Periodontist regularly to ensure that your dental health doesn’t have a negative effect on your heart health.
