Do I Need Dental Crown Lengthening?

Dental crowns are a common solution to the problem of advanced tooth decay or an accident. However, in some cases, we may need to perform a procedure called crown lengthening, or crown exposure, to adequately place a crown on a tooth.

Some patients have too much gum or bone tissue covering their teeth, and a crown lengthening procedure seeks to address that. The crown lengthening procedure makes more of the tooth accessible for treatment.

During the procedure, we adjust the levels of the gum tissue and bone around the tooth to create a new, more effective gum-tooth relationship. This enables us to reach new areas during restoration to ensure a proper fit of the crown to the tooth. It should also provide enough tooth structure so the new restoration will not come loose in the future. This allows you to clean the edge of the restoration when you brush and floss to prevent decay and gum disease. The crown lengthening procedure typically takes approximately one hour.
